25 years ago – 2000
Sashabaw Plains park eyed for improvement: Independence Township Parks and Recreation Director Ann Conklin was looking for volunteers with team spirit. She hoped community members would sign up for a playscape build at Sashabaw Plains Park on Maybee Road in the spring. The build was one of many improvements Conklin hoped to make to the park in years to come including an in-line skating park, soccer fields and a basketball park. “We really don’t have a lot there,” she said. “That’s why we’re trying to do a lot of things to that park.”
Clarkston Middle School Choir students are ‘Superior’: The Clarkston Middle School eighth grade ensemble was successful at the Solo and Ensemble Festival at Hart Middle School. Both CMS entries attained Division 1 Superior ratings and received wonderful comments and advice from the judges.
Cagers season ends in OT: Pontiac Central lost 14 games during its regular season, two of which came at the hands of Clarkston. The third time was the charm for the Chiefs as they ended the season for the Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball team. The Wolves fell 67-61 in overtime in the region 6 opener. Coach Dan Fife shared it was a game of streaks.
50 years ago – 1975
Village businesses form association: Parking and the preservation of Clarkston’s atmosphere was on the minds of downtown business people in the village. To present a united front about these and other concerns, a Village Business Association of Clarkston was being formed. Fifteen people attended the first session of the organization.
EDC formed – court plan still open: The Clarkston Village Council approved the formation of a non-profit Economic Development Corporation (EDC) for the purpose of providing district court facilities within the village. Any building plans submitted by the EDC, which would raise money by the sale tax exempt bonds, would have to be approved by the village planning commission and the village council.
First graders visit museum: Mrs. Simmon and Miss Kluesner’s classes went to the Ruthven Exhibit Museum in Ann Arbor on Saturday. Some of the displays the first grades students saw included dinosaur bones, insects, birds, mammals, reptiles, rocks and a moving squid. On the bus ride home, the students enjoyed popcorn and juice while singing songs.
75 years ago – 1950
Students presented in piano recital: Mrs. Charles S. Matthews presented three of her advanced students in a recital at her studio. There were about 80 guests present to hear Sylvia Petersen, Joseph Kleiner and Charles Bradley. The three young artists mastered several different numbers.
John Adams in Mediterranean area: John M. Adams, fireman apprentice, USN, of Buffalo Street, visited Augusta, Sicily; Naples, Italy; and the Island of Cyprus during February while serving abroad the oiler USS Waccamaw. Attached to the Sixth Fleet, the Waccamaw participated in maneuvers in the Mediterranean and put in to the above ports to afford all hands an opportunity for liberty and recreation.
The Hilltopper: The first year home economics class and students from the vocational guidance class, interested in scientific occupations, toured Pontiac General Hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, the students were divided into three group, each led by a hospital employee. One group was first taken to the blood bank where they saw a transfusion being administered to an elderly lady.
