25 years ago – 1995
“Privatization meetings set” The Clarkston Board of Education set two special meetings to review proposals for the privatization of transportation and maintenance services.
“’Bonkers’ family center needs ordinance change” Investors wanted to build an establishment similar to Chuck E. Cheese family entertainment centers in a vacant supermarket at the northwest corner of Maybee and Sashabaw roads but they wanted to change a Independence Township’s ordinance which prohibited video/arcade games.
“Middle school sports approved” The Clarkston Board of Education approved the addition of middle school football and girls volleyball. The proposal created an eighth-grade football team at each of the two middle schools and seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball teams.
50 years ago – 1970
“Subdivision effect on flood plain concern of township residents” Representatives from five subdivisions contacted the state with concerns of possible effect a subdivision would have on the flood plain in the northern portion of Independence Township.
“Three school track records broken” The Clarkston Track team broke three school records at the Oxford Invitational with Tom Mauti in pole vault, 11-6; Fred Seyler, 1-mile run, 4:26.4; and Seyler, Mike Humphreys, Kurt Carlsen and Harold Ballough, mile relay, 3:34.
“Around town” A family camping trip was the highlight of the weekend for five Clarkston couples and their 11 children at Island Lake camp in Brighton.
75 years ago – 1945
“Students hear President Truman’s message” At 9 a.m. sharp on May 8, every student and teach in Clarkston Schools listened to President Harry S. Truman’s address proclaiming Germany’s surrender. Everyone stood for the national anthem following the address.
“V-E Day celebrants quiet in Clarkston” It was a day of rejoicing in a quiet way in Clarkston as stores closed for V-E, Victory in Europe, Day. The bank, post office and cafe remained opened and schools held their regular sessions.
“Farmington bows to Clarkston” Clarkston Varsity Baseball defeated Farmington, 6-1. Bud Kratt pitched against a tough team with one hit and one run. Frank Ronk and Earle Garneau both hit doubles.
