25 years ago – 1999
In remembrance: Close to 200 Clarkston residents attended the 1999 Memorial Day Parade and memorial services on Monday morning to honor veterans of past wars. The parade traveled through downtown Clarkston before ending at Lakeview Cemetery, where a roll call of deceased veterans with close to 400 names was read.
Road block lifted on Walters’ paving project: It was the end of the road for paving problems on Walters. Independence Township Supervisor Dale Stuart announced the Road Commission for Oakland County had agreed to pay any contingency costs over the $253,000 recently approved by the school board. Walters, a gravel road at the time, was designed to be paved from Waldon Road to the new high school on Flemings Lake Road.
Reading, writing and…yo-yos?: Science can be fun – it was a lesson Nancy Battishill’s fifth graders at Pine Knob Elementary learned. Earlier in the spring when Battishill asked her students to design their own science experiment, they asked her to use yo-yos. It was the fourth unit in the school’s hands-on science curriculum. During the year, students learned about models and designs by making rubber band powered go-karts, and about mixtures and solutions by creation their own recipes for Kool Aid.
50 years ago – 1974
Pine Knob traffic pact reached: A traffic and crowd control agreement for five rather than eight deputies was reached by Pine Knob owners and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department. The contract, which called for five uniformed deputies to work an average of six hours every night there was a performance at the music theater, should not cost more than $36,000 per the season.
Voters promise millage support: Fifty-eight percent of Clarkston School District voters said they supported the proposed four mill increase in operating tax levy which would go before voters June 10. The findings were revealed in a telephone survey undertaken for the school district by Polly Carrithers of Oakland Intermediate Schools.
The mill stream: Members of Cub Scout Pack 49 held their Pinewood Derby at Clarkston Junior High School. Robert Bennett beat the other 16 entries with Mike Boberg coming in second and Jeff Stonerock in third.
75 years ago – 1949
Many pay tribute to honored dead: Monday was the community went to Lakeview Cemetery for Memorial Day to pay tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice. The parade, headed by the colors and the Clarkston School Band, arrived in the cemetery in time to start the service at 10 a.m. Reverend F. J. Delaney gave the invocation and the band played the national anthem.
Firefighters’ sponsor first street carnival: The Clarkston Firefighters’ Association sponsored a spring carnival on West Washington at Main Street. In cooperation with the Cote Shows and the community’s help, the firemen raised funds to help the firefighters carry on their work.
Science Club news: The Homemakers Club gave a surprise party honoring the members of the Domestic Science Club at the home of Mrs. Matthew Johnson in Clarkston. The members enjoyed a very lovely evening of dancing and playing cards. Later in the evening, dainty refreshments were served from a white lace covered table centered with red and blue carnations.
