While assisting the Almont Police Department in apprehending a fleeing and eluding suspect late Sunday night, Deputy William Baldwin from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Addison substation was involved in a small crash in his patrol unit.
According to the sheriff’s report, Almont Police were in pursuit of a 31-year-old Romeo man suspected of a hit-and-run. The chase began near 36 Mile and Dequindre roads where the alleged crime occurred.
When the suspect’s vehicle entered Addison Twp. it was involved in yet another crash near Rochester Rd. north of Mack Rd. and intentionally rammed an Almont police car on Lakeville Rd., west of Rochester Rd. The unit received extensive damage, but there were no reported injuries.
The suspect continued fleeing with a flat tire, so another deputy used ‘stop sticks? containing sharp spikes on Leonard Rd., but that didn’t stop him.
The man continued driving with two flat tires onto northbound Lake George Rd. where he sideswiped into Deputy Baldwin’s patrol unit causing only minor damage to the front end of the car and no injuries to the deputy.
He then fled the scene on foot toward a wooded area on Lake George Rd. where Deputy Baldwin, an Almont police officer and a Macomb County sheriff’s deputy tasered him, taking control of the situation.
Law enforcement officers from Macomb and Oakland counties and state police were all in pursuit of the suspect at various times.
Oakland County Sheriff’s Sgt. Pete Burkett said that the man will be charged for all of these separate crimes in Almont, even for those committed in Addison. Officials are still in the process of compiling their warrants and building a case against the Romeo man.
