Hypnosis is defined as an altered state of consciousness, also known as a trance.
Hypnosis is derived from the Greek word of ‘hypno? which means to sleep. But, on the contrary, although the body and conscious mind are in a relaxed state, the subconscious remains alert and awake.
Shirley Patterson, who founded the Patterson Center of Alternative Medicine in November of 2008, uses hypnosis in her psychological sessions. She compares this trance-like state to what people often experience when watching television or waiting at a red light. She also uses a stress reduction technique known as reiki.
Patterson has recently opened a new location for the Patterson Center at the Orion Office Center in Lake Orion, located at 1520 South Lapeer Road, Suite 203.
‘I knew I wanted to be in an area that projected a clean, healthy, comfortable atmosphere,? Patterson said of the Lake Orion community.
The Patterson Center currently offers hypnosis, hynotherapy, coaching, and reiki. Counseling services will be coming soon, and Patterson gives referrals when needed.
‘My lifelong dream was to become a counselor and assist clients through life difficulties,? Patterson said.
Patterson is a certified hypnotherapist and a reiki II practitioner.
She said that she saw hypnosis demonstrated at a seminar, and she knew she had to offer it to her clients after seeing its results. She has seen the beneficial effects of hypnosis firsthand.
One of her clients was a man who worked on scaffolding. But he was also afraid of heights, and at his job, he would sweat and tremble. Patterson helped him to eliminate this fear of heights that was detrimental to his career. With hypnosis, this man was able to identify the source of his fear and, in doing so, eliminate it.
Patterson said that hypnothesis helps people let out memories or problems they have been too embarrassed to talk about. But once they let it out, Patterson helps them to see what caused the problem so they can ultimately conquer it.
The Patterson Center has also help clients with weight loss, stress management, insomnia, fear of flying, quitting smoking, and pain management. Sessions at the Patterson Center are confidential. Doctors referrals are accepted. For those who are curious about the services offered at the Patterson Center, initial consultations are $25.
