Athletic booster Jim Reis files for school board seat

The Chairman of the Oxford Turf Committee is throwing his hat into the ring for the open school board seat in the upcoming November election.
Jim Reis will be running for school board seat left by Doug Myer, who chose not to seek re-election.
‘I have been involved in the community since my kids started school,? Reis said. ‘I coached youth baseball, youth football, soccer at one time, basketball. I have just been in the community and I just think maybe I can do something on the school board to help and continue to be a part of the community,? he said.
The community can think Oxford everytime they look at Reis.
When he isn’t busy working, he spends his time as the Chairman of Oxford’s Turf Committee and serves as the Vice-President of the Oxford Athletic Booster’s Club. During his time with the Oxford Junior Wildcats, Reis served as a coach for both his son and daughter, which he said was a ‘just awesome.?
He also served at OJW’s treasurer, general manager and helped turn it into a nonprofit organization.
‘I don’t think of it in terms of what did I do, I just jump in and help out,? he said.
According to Reis, his number one goal, if he were to get on the board, would be to make sure every student in Oxford gets the help they need to succeed.
‘I have seen both ends of the spectrum. I got one child that really struggled and I got one child that never struggled at all, never got less than an ‘A? in any class,? he said. ‘I want to be able to work with whatever it takes to help out all the kids.?
He feels Oxford’s teachers are ‘over the top and excellent? and ‘I want to make sure that the teachers have the tools that they need to help all the kids,? he said.
He added his biggest concern for the district is making sure all the kids get help.
‘If advanced kids need more tools to help them and give them a step ahead when they get to college, that’s great,? he added. ‘If the ones that are underachieving need extra help or need to be helped through different programs, I want to make sure that happens.?
Reis also wants to make sure the district continues to spend wisely.
‘I want to make sure we are spending our money wisely and it’s going to educate kids,? he said.
Reis thinks Superintendent Dr. William Skilling has the school district heading in the right direction.
‘Dr. Skilling and the board are trying to look at the school district more in a business sense and not depend on state aid because obviously tax revenue is down and the state is struggling,? he said. ‘I think they have to create new ways to bring in revenue, and I think they are headed in the right direction with that part of it.?
