Bike accident claims life of 24-year-old

A 24-year-old Orion man died soon after falling off his bicycle and sustaining severe head injuries on Candlewick Drive on June 25.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, Nicholas Aaron Cooksey was riding eastbound on Candlewick, when the accident occurred at about 7 p.m.
A witness saw Cooksey raise his front wheel off the ground, and then fall off the front of the bike after putting it back down.
Cooksey was the only person involved in the accident, and hid behind a tree when deputies and fire personnel arrived on the scene.
Lieutenant Bruce Naile of the OCSD Orion Substation believed Cooksey hid in large part due to the head injuries he had sustained.
He was taken to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where he was later pronounced dead as doctors could not stave off the severe damage caused by Cooksey hitting his head on the gravel road.
