The Orion Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously (6-0) on Monday night to adopt a resolution to support local control of speed limits on gravel roads.
The decision comes while Gov. Jennifer Granholm is mulling over Senate Bill 248, which would restore the 25 mph speed limits on gravel roads and give locals the ability to petition the road commission for increases.
The board held a public hearing at their Monday night meeting, hearing a presentation from Thad Peterson, a First Lieutenant with the Michigan State Police, and Dave Allyn from the Road Commission of Oakland County.
‘Any speed limit on a dirt or gravel road will not be raised from its Nov. 9 speed limit unless there’s a request from the township,? Allyn noted of the pending legislation.
