During a significant day for the Brandon girls track team, two Blackhawks stood out for achieving significant school milestones.
Seniors Sarah Bond and Kelly Wilson set school records as the Blackhawks won their Division 2 regional Friday, May 19 at Marysville, finishing with a total of 98 points. Kearsley was second with 70 points.
The top two finishers in each event qualify for the state meet, and competitors who meet or exceed state standards in a given event, but do not finish in the top two at regionals, still qualify for states as well.
Bond notched two school records, winning the shot put (40?7?) and the discus (137?1-1/2?) in the process, while Wilson set a new standard in the 3,200 meters by winning that event in 11:31.5.
Teammate Kelsey Carmean finished fourth in the 3,200 meters, but her time of 11:46.32 was enough for her to qualify for the state meet.
In addition to Bond, Savannah Stedman was the other Brandon girls? competitor to qualify in two different events, placing second in the high jump (5?3?) and third in the discus (114?8-1/2?).
Other Brandon state qualifiers were Kayla Doan in the 1600 meters (5:23.07) and Megan Ostrowski in the pole vault (8?6?), both of whom finished second in those events at regionals.
‘We placed a lot of kids ? more than ever before at regionals,? Brandon coach Greg Hyde said. ‘It was a big day for the entire team.?
Also placing in the meet were Norissa Sockwell in the 100 meter hurdles (fourth), Janessa Fahr in the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles (fifth in each, Brett Auger in the 400 meter dash (fifth), Allie Sowa in the 300 meter hurdles (third) and Doan in the 800 meters (fifth).
In addition, the 400 meter and 3,200 meter relay teams placed fourth, while the 1,600 meter relay team finished fifth and the 800 meter relay team sixth.
Meanwhile, the Brandon boys team finished ninth among teams in the Division 2 competition at Marysville, with Croswell-Lexington taking first place with 116 points.
Nick Mackie was the lone Blackhawk to qualify for the state meet, placing second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.12.
