A Brandon Township man who terrorized his neighborhood Wednesday morning by firing shots and assaulting a woman, was safely taken into custody and was expected to be arraigned on charges Friday.
‘It was a very dangerous situation, it could have gone very, very bad,? said Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Pete Burkett, commander of the Brandon substation. ‘Thankfully our deputies were able to get the situation under control.?
According to a major incident report from the OCSO, at 10:47 a.m., Aug. 1, Brandon deputies responded to a complaint of felonious assault, man with a gun and shots fired in the area of Inner Drive near Chevrolet Avenue in the township.
Initial information was that the suspect, a 61-year-old male, was shooting a gun.
Burkett said 10 OCSO patrol units responded, deploying what he calls ‘an active shooter detail,? a procedure every officer in the department has been trained for as a result of Columbine, the high school shooting tragedy that occured April 20, 1999 in which two students shot to death a teacher and 12 of their fellow classmates.
‘We’re not waiting for SWAT, this guy was actively shooting up and down the street. We did a fighting diamond formation and went through the neighbor hood. We got him before he went in his house which was great, because we found multiple firearms in the home. He was ready to go to battle.?
According to the report, the suspect said he thought the police were trying to kill him and he was protecting himself. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Oakland County Jail. Burkett said the man was to be arraigned Aug. 3 on multiple charges, including felonious assault, assault and battery and drug charges.
The woman whom the suspect punched in the face was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
