The old saying ‘when pigs fly? will come to fruition at this year’s Barn Daze event.
After a one-year absence, the Pig Throwing Contest is back by popular demand.
The fifth annual Barn Daze will take place at Friendship Park, located at Clarkston and Baldwin Roads, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 14.
The event is sponsored and organized by the Orion Township Parks and Recreation Department.
Among the many activities planned for the day are hay wagon rides, a petting farm, children’s games, great food, and a variety of live demonstrations and entertainment.
Orion Township Recreation Program Supervisor Jennifer Rowe promises that no pigs will be hurt in the process of the Pig Throwing Contest, but encourages people to come see the action for themselves.
People were skeptical of the contest the first time it was held, but that attitude changed quickly.
‘Once they saw how much fun it was, we must have had over 30 people decide that they wanted to participate and throw a pig,? she said.
She added that the number of calls she received in the past year about the contest, last held at the 2004 Barn Daze, was overwhelming and forced her to bring it back.
For those not sure how to throw a pig, directions and rules for the contest, as well as the chance to register to take part, will be available on the parks and recreation website.
Registration for the porker toss will also be handled at the event.
Rowe said the winner will receive a gift certificate for a ham and egg breakfast at the Baldwin Cafe.
