Cardinals grounded, Panthers caged

The Oxford varsity boys soccer team came out on top once again at their last two games. First, beating Davison 6-1 on Thursday and then shutting out Lapeer West 8-0 Monday night.
Coach John Thaler said the Wildcats fell behind a little in the first half of the Davison game, which gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, but captain Erik Anderson evened up the score at the end of the first half with a great penalty kick.
The second half of the game started with senior Francesco Paese getting the kick-off and dribbling around five Davison players, giving captain Zac Wasylyna a clear shot past the goal keeper in 11 seconds flat.
Wasylyna, once again, put Oxford up 3-1 after a great throw-in from captain Mark Jones.
Sophomore Doug Kiracofe put the Wildcats up 4-1 within the first five minutes of the second half.
‘Oxford’s defense of captains Mark Jones and Erik Anderson, as well as Mat Patria and Dan Arft, did a great job keeping Davison out of the back and making an easy night for sophomore keeper Steven Walker,? Thaler said.
The final 10 minutes of the game saw Paese and Nick Henry score a goal a piece.
On Monday, the boys came out strong against Lapeer West with an early goal by Paese off a steal from midfield.
From there, Oxford went on to score six more goals in the half, two by Paese, two by Wasylyna and two by senior Bryan Ward.
Assists went to junior defender Arft, junior midfielder David Hurrish, junior midfielder Gethin Angell, Anderson and Jones.
One minute into the second half, Wasylyna slotted a pass to senior midfielder Alex McKeown, who netted the game ending goal.
‘Oxford’s defense held strong all night, rarely letting the Panthers get close to Oxford’s goal,? Thaler said. ‘This was a total team effort and a much deserved win for the squad.?
The boys? record now stands at 8-2 overall and 3-0 in FML.
They travel to Fenton tonight for a 6:45 p.m. game.
