The Wildcats ran their record to 6-0 behind strong pitching performances from Junior Corinne Luxton, who fired a no-hitter against Davison and pitched 21 innings over the weekend in the Owosso Invitational.
On Thursday, April 14, Corrine Luxton dominated the Cardinals from the opening batter, throwing a no-hitter in the Wildcat’s 12-0 victory in game one. She finished the game with nine strikeouts and two walks.
‘Corinne was great. After being off a whole week for Spring Break and to come in and produce like that was a true testament to how talented she is? said Varsity Co-Head Coach Kristi McDevitt.
The defense didn’t let Corinne down either. ‘Our defense made all the right plays when Davison connected with the ball and frustrated the Cardinals even more,? coach McDevitt said.
Junior Allie Laidlaw led the hitting attack for the Wildacts. She finished the game with a double, two singles, and three RBI’s. Junior Chelsea Kessler was two for four with an RBI and two runs scored, while Senior Sarah Kessler, sophomore Alyssa Hurtado and freshman Courtney Wroubel each had two RBI’s apiece.
The second game of the Davison doubleheader was a mirror image of the first, with the Wildcats coming out on top 12-1.
All phases of the game were on display: Luxton firing a two hitter while striking out six and walking four, Senior first baseman Jennifer Taraski had seven put-outs, and Hurtado and Senior Kylie Bowles both went two for three with three RBI’s. Edgemon added two RBI’s.
Over the weekend, the sun shone down on the Wildcats as they won the Owosso Invitational on Saturday, April 18.
The four team round robin tournament included Owosso, Freeland and FML rival Swartz Creek. The Wildcats were able to go undefeated, which avenges last year’s tournament where they were winless in the three games.
They got off to a hot start, beating Owosso 9-6. They followed that game with an impressive 9-3 victory over Freeland.
In the final game of the day, the Wildcats overcame Swartz Creek, defeating them 8-2 and taking home the championship trophy.
Co-Coaches McDevitt and Dana Nowacki were pleased with the effort of the girls during the three-game stretch in one day.
‘We really showed up to play and we happy to compete with some really good competition. We are so proud of the girls? said Coach McDevitt.
