INDEPENDENCE TWP. — Kids were just finishing their popsicle break during the Musical Theatre Camp, July 25, when their counselors jumped on the stage and began dancing the choreography to Aladdin’s “Friend Like Me” in the Clarkston High School Performing Arts Center.
The campers ran onto the stage, stepped into position and began dancing with the counselors.
The energy continued as the campers, entering grades third through eighth, rehearsed for the performance for family and friends.
During the four-day camp, the kids learned songs and choreography to Broadway musical songs from the Clarkston High School Drama Club.
“It’s been going good,” said Director Amy Seaman.
As the campers rehearsed they were given pieces of advice which could help in a big way.
“Whatever happens, do your best and have fun,” Seaman shared with the campers. “If you make a mistake just keep going. No one knows you made a mistake but you. The audience doesn’t know.”
As the time counted down to noon, the campers did one more run through beginning with the whole group’s opening performance of “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from “Hairspray.”
“Have fun,” Seaman shared. “If you don’t have a solo, dance in place.”

Then, they divided as one group danced and sang to “Anything You Can Do” from “Annie Get Your Gun” and the other group did “Love is an Open Door” from Disney’s “Frozen.”
They finished singing “I Have a Dream” by ABBA.
“Thumbs up,” Seaman said, as the group finished with the song. “I told you to look dreamy and you did.
The camp was held July 22-25. The drama club also led kids in Acting Camp Part 1 for grades 3-7, held July 31 – August 1; and Acting Camp Part 2 for grades 4-8, August 5-8. All camps were offered through Clarkston Community Education.
