Kids are ‘getting a clue? during the summer reading program at the Orion Township Public Library.
According to Children’s Librarian Claire Poynter, it’s not too late to sign up your children for the summer reading program.
The program is for infants through children entering fifth grade and runs through August 18.
Poynter said that participants are supposed to keep track of time spent reading and then they can earn prizes.
The theme for this summer’s reading program is ‘Get a Clue @ Your Library,? and sticking with the theme, the library is offering lots of mysteries and puzzles to share.
‘Research shows that children who do not continue reading through the summer can lose a month or more of progress made during the school year,? Poynter said.
‘The number of books read during the summer is consistently related to academic gains. Children who read six or more books over the summer gained more in reading achievement than children who did not,? she added, saying that it is important to take time to enjoy a book with your children.
According to Poynter, the summer reading program is generously supported by The Friends of the Orion Library, and prizes have been donated by several local businesses, including Applebee’s, Giggle Beans, Great Lakes Athletic Club, Little Monsters and Sugar Buzz.
For those children interested in participating in the summer reading program, stop by the children’s desk at the library to register.
