Some groups may claim to be a true representation of the area, but few can match the wide range of ages and origins unique to the Clarkston Community Band.
With members from high school age to seniors, and people from as far as Lapeer and Sterling Heights, the Clarkston Community Band is unified by their passion for music.
Opening the Local Talent Spotlight for Concerts in the Park on July 8 is one of the last performances of their season, which lasts from September to July.
The band, who recently performed at ‘Stars Over Clarkston,? presents a full ensemble of instruments concert-goers may recognize.
‘At the Concerts in the Park Series last year, we performed in front of our largest audience,? said band member Melanie Cantino.
According to Cantino, the band is looking forward to celebrating its 10th anniversary in September that was far from guaranteed.
‘Last year we were in transition. We lost a director… so many people in the band stepped up in support, including our current director Vince Chrisman and Independence Township Parks and Recreation,? said Cantino.
Currently, Cantino said the band is supported by business donations and does not charge performing fees.
Cantino stressed the noncompetitive nature of the band and said those interested in joining may simply show up at practice and fill out a registration form, which includes a $25 fee. While no level of ability is mandatory, she suggested band hopefuls have high school level ability.
Next season’s first practice is tentatively scheduled for September 6. For information, call Independence Township Parks and Recreation at 248-625-8223.
The Concerts in the Park series will continue July 15 and 22 at Depot Park in downtown Clarkston. Local talent will precede the headliners at 6:30 p.m. The main act will play from 7?9 p.m.
