Groveland Twp.- On Sept. 13, local and state officials, along with Consumers Energy President and CEO John Russell, celebrated the completion of the new Groveland Township Service Center.
The $7.5 million, 22,666 square-foot service center opened in June and is designed to help provide natural gas service to more than 114,000 homes and businesses in Oakland County. The new township center, located on 20 acres purchased by Consumers Energy several years prior near Dixie Highway and Grange Hall Road, consolidated facilities in Pontiac and Lapeer with 75 employees working from the new location.
Consumers Energy selected the township due to the high number of natural gas customers located in the area. Consumers Energy’s natural gas customer base in Oakland County includes 255,000 customers being served out of the Royal Oak service center as well as the Groveland facility.
‘We hope the new Groveland Township service center acts as a sparkplug to draw attention to the area for continued business growth,? said Bob DePalma, township supervisor, who joined Ruth Johnson, Michigan Secretary of State, and township residents at the dedication. ‘The Consumers-owned property was vacant and will now generate some additional tax revenue. This project, along with the Bedrock Express expansion will be a catalyst for the township.?
The new facility is a LEEDS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). A LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that the building was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
Specifically unique features include motion sensors on primary floor lighting and in restrooms to help save electricity, water recycling systems for garage/wash bay wastewater and white-colored roofing materials reflecting sunlight and reducing energy use. Employees perform work including installation of new gas service lines and repair of existing lines, emergency response and gas leak investigations, appliance service repairs, engineering design, recordkeeping, facility maintenance and vehicle/equipment maintenance.
