Dragon GAP hosts winter mountain bike, running race

A little snow didn’t stop some outdoor enthusiasts from participating in the first annual Dragon GAP Winter Races.
According to GAP Coordinator and Assistant Athletic Director Ben Gerdeman, 23 runners and 27 bikers came out for the winter races, which was a fundraiser for Dragon GAP. The event raised $950.
‘All in all we had a beautiful sunny day and all of the participants had a great time,? he added.
The event covered a 3.2 mile course, and the category participants chose to compete in determined how many loops they did (one loop for runners, one loop for beginner bikers, two loops for sport bikers and three loops for expert/elite bikers). The course featured the trails behind Lake Orion High School, as well as a portion of Bald Mountain.
According to Gerdeman, the race was the brainchild of Lake Orion resident Steve Kinley, who is a member of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association, and wanted Gerdeman to host a winter race at LOHS.
