West Bloomfield — As Clarkston Varsity Field Hockey team was celebrating the end of the game and their first win of the season a rainbow appeared over the field at the Lakers’ stadium on Monday, Aug. 29.
“It was pretty exciting,” said Cary Exline, head coach about the 4-2 victory. “In the whole time I have been with the program I don’t think we have ever scored four goals. The number of shots we had was the most we have ever had in a game. Everything was right. Everything you hope when you run through a practice – playing as a team, working as units. It’s good when everything works together.”
Stella Cach scored the first goal of the season and the game as her shot went right between the Lakers’ goalie’s legs in the second quarter.
Claire Dean added one more goal before the end of the first half, putting the score, 2-0. She scored another goal in the third quarter after West Bloomfield scored their first goal.
“Last year Claire played a lot of defense,” Exline said. “She has speed. She has skill. She has a vision. Those are things that are very important for offense. She is a midfielder this year and scored two goals.”
Hailey Jones scored the final goal off a 50-yard long pass from Emily Ervin.
Myah Sadowski had nine saves.
“She plays out of her mind,” Exline said, adding it was a whole team win.
The Wolves lost to Detroit Country Day last Wednesday, 6-0.
“Myah shined again,” Exline said. “There were about 36 shots on goal.”
He added it was a different game compared to West Bloomfield as Detroit Country Day has a longer history as a program and has middle school, JV and varsity teams. “Look at a program with history, we did very well. They are competitive. We were down players and had one sub. With one minute left, they were still running up and down the field trying to score. I am very proud of them. They don’t quit. They just keep going.”
The Wolves host Edsel Ford on Monday, September 12 and just over a week long break.
“They need some time off,” Exline said. “We had five games in August. There are some battle wounds that need to heal. After that we will be competitive for the rest of the year.”
