Fire millage renewal to appear on August ballot

The Orion Township Board of Trustees voted last week to place a ballot proposal on the Aug. 5 state primary election that would renew the current operating millage for the township’s fire department.
The wording will first be reviewed by the township’s legal counsel, something Supervisor Jerry Dywasuk said is also being done with the safety path millage renewal language.
Proposed ballot language from Fire Chief Jeff Key asks to continue to ‘levy 0.9916 of one mill for a period of four years.?
This would mean a levy of $0.9916 per $1,000 taxable value on all taxable property in the township and the village, according to Key.
The language is essentially the same as the proposal approved back in 2004, and does not include any type of increase.
‘Given the current state of the economy, we felt asking for (an) increase would not be appropriate at this time,? Key said in a memo to the board.
The millage is intended to allow for ‘the operation and maintenance of the fire department,? which serves both the township and village.
