GHS gridders aim to end year with three straight wins

With two consecutive wins under their belts, the Goodrich varsity football team is hoping this season will end on a positive note.
The Martians? most recent win came against host Corunna in an Oct. 13 game, where the Martians earned a 27-7 victory. With the win, Goodrich improved to 3-5 on the season, entering their scheduled Oct. 20 finale at home against Yale.
‘The kids are making plays,? Goodrich coach Tom Alward said. ‘We’ve been in games all year long, and just haven’t been making the plays. We knew it would happen eventually; we just hoped it would happen sooner in the year. That was a big win for us. We’re excited about it and excited about our final game of the year.?
The Cavaliers took an early 7-0 lead on a Brandon Youngston 66-yard touchdown run. However, that would be the Cavaliers? only scoring of the game.
Jake Bourassa capped a Goodrich scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter to tie the contest at seven. Both teams would remain scoreless through the remainder of the first half.
However, Bourassa put the Martians ahead for good in the third quarter with an 80-yard kickoff return on the opening kickoff of the second half. Goodrich added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, as Tyler Moncrieff and Grant Overcashier each scored on four-yard touchdown runs.
The Martians? scheduled Oct. 20 opponent, Yale, has a season record of 1-7, including a 34-14 loss to Algonac in an Oct. 13 game.
However, Alward cautioned the Bulldogs are a better team than their record may indicate.
‘They’re a good football team; they’re similar to us in that they’ve been in every game they’ve played this year. We’ll have to show up and play.?
Alward said the Martians have an excellent attitude heading toward the end of the season.
‘There’s always some melancholy for the seniors, being that it’s their last game of high school football,? he said. ‘That’s inevitable ? I don’t care what your record is. We’re working hard, and I couldn’t be prouder of our team.?
