Goodrich softball clinches first league crown in 30 years

One league championship plus one tournament championship equals a successful week for the Goodrich softball team.
In their most recent action Monday, May 16, the Martians clinched their first outright Genesee Area Conference Red Division championship in 30 years, defeating visiting LakeVille 9-0 in the opener and 16-3 in the nightcap.
Goodrich is now 30-2 overall and 15-0 in league play.
In the opener, Jessica Morgan pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out nine batters. Ashley Short sparked the Goodrich offense with two triples, two RBI, and two runs scored.
The Martians broke out the heavy lumber in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the second inning and nine in the fifth on their way to the win.
Kelsey Krych went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Kortni Elsworth went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Tori Morgan was the winning pitcher, improving to 7-1 on the season. She allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out five.
Pitching was the key to the Martians? success at the Petoskey Tournament Saturday, May 14, as Goodrich allowed only one run and two hits combined in their three wins.
The Martians? first win came at the expense of Reese, as Jessica Morgan threw a one-hitter, striking out five as the Martians won 2-0. Krych and Elsworth each went 2-for-3 for the Martians.
It was Tori Morgan’s turn to shine in the Martians? second game of the tourney against Mason County Eastern. Morgan no-hit Eastern in five innings of work, and the Martians? bats took care of the rest, with Goodrich earning a 9-0 win.
Morgan struck out six batters and walked two. Julie Owen went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Krych went 2-for-3.
In the third game, it was Jessica Morgan one-hitting Escanaba as the Martians clinched the tournament championship with a 2-1 win. Goodrich spotted Escanaba a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the win.
The Martians were aided by three Escanaba errors, which led to both Goodrich runs.
In a May 12 doubleheader at Goodrich, the Martians won the opener 2-0 and the nightcap 20-0.

The Martians then went ballistic in the nightcap, scoring 20 runs in a five-inning contest, which was more than enough for winning pitcher Tori Morgan, who struck out seven Byron batters and allowed only two hits.
