Home victories over both Troy schools last week got the Dragons back to the .500 mark in league play, with district play underway this week.
‘We finished exactly where I thought we would in the league,? said coach Erick Pfeiffer, who tabbed this a ‘rebuilding? year prior to the start of the season.
‘Basically it was a young, rebuilding team,? he said of the squad’s regular season.
Goals from A.J. Wells and Reed Losee propelled them to a 2-1 win over Troy Athens on Oct. 10. Scott Morris assisted on both Dragon goals as Lake Orion rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit.
Two days later, Losee and Eric Freiburger scored for the Dragons and Ryan King pitched a shutout in goal in a 2-0 win over Troy. Tim Stonerock added an assist.
LO improved to 8-7-2 overall and 5-5-2 in league play with the two victories.
‘It’s the toughest league in the state,? Pfeiffer said of the OAA I, which was won by Rochester Adams last Thursday.
‘It would not surprise me if a third place team in our league won the state,? he added, noting that scenario has played itself out before.
But after finishing a tough league, things don’t get any easier for a Dragon squad that hosts a regional including teams like Adams and Clarkston.
‘We’re probably in the hardest district in the state,? Pfeiffer said.
His squad topped Adams early in the league season, but then Adams went on to claim the title. The two teams will square off again on Thursday night, after the Dragons defeated Pontiac Northern 6-0 in round one on Tuesday night.
