Lacrosse team off to 0-4 start

With their family, friends and school mates cheering on the sidelines, the Oxford boy’s lacrosse team gave it their best last week, but weren’t able to defeat either of their opponents.
Although the boys lost 1-5 to Romeo last Tuesday, coach Brian Edwards said certain players stood out and were successful.
‘Our goalies played well, especially sophomore Derick Stinson, who only gave up two goals in the first half,? he said.
Senior goalie Scott Steffes also played well in the second half when Romeo’s offense started ‘clicking.?
Senior Keith Bessler played a physical game, hitting everything that moved and taking penalties, while senior Logan Fulk was good on individual offense.
Chris Hickey, senior, was the only Oxford teammate to score a goal.
On Thursday, the Wildcats kept the score close with a 5-6 loss to Utica Eisenhower.
Senior Adam McLoskey scored two goals, while Hickey, senior Kevin Freismuth and freshman Dan Twork had one a piece.
Bessler, Fulk and senior Brad Jacobsen all played solid defense.
Oxford led most of the game, but a late charge by Utica helped them overcome a 4-3 deficit to win it. ‘I think we need to work on our transition game,? Edwards said. ‘We had difficulty setting up our offense in the second half, which allowed Utica to get back into the game.?
On April 19, the team lost 6-4 to Saginaw Heritage. Edwards said they ‘came out flat,? but fought their way back from a 3-0 deficit with an ‘awesome? second half and two quick goals. Oxford and Saginaw went back and forth, but in the end couldn’t ‘close the gap.?
Oxford lost 2-1 to West Bloomfield on Monday. Edwards said their opponents had a ‘tough goalie.? The Cats take on Saginaw Heritage at 1 p.m. Saturday at the OHS football field on N. Oxford Rd. and would appreciate the support of the community.
