Lake residents are frustrated by lack of MDEQ action on marina proposal issue

Over six weeks after a heated Michigan Department of Environmental Quality public hearing, some residents that live near Pine Island on Lake Orion are wondering when they will see some action taken on a proposed marina by former state senator Mat Dunaskiss.
‘Something has to be done,? said lake association president Ed Roberts, about the late-night noise on the island, noting it was particularly bad around the 4th of July.
‘All these people signed the petition and nothing is happening,? he said, referring to the over 400 petition signatures the lake association presented to the MDEQ and Orion Township in June.
Roberts said he has contacted Supervisor Jerry Dywasuk about the issue in the past week to get an update.
Dywasuk said the issue of loud parties is more of a police matter than a building enforcement issue.
‘If people have a complaint, they should call the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department,? he said.
The non-emergency number for the OCSD Patrol dispatch is (248) 858-4950, and can be reached any time.
Dywasuk said the township has done some monitoring of the situation during the day.
‘That’s not when we’re having the problem,? noted Roberts.
A decision on the permit is due in September, though Justin Smith, the primary MDEQ worker on the case, said he’s hoping a decision will be made sometime in August.
Roberts said he was frustrated by the lack of cooperation he has gotten from the MDEQ offices, noting that tapes of the public hearing that were supposed to be available for $30 have not been for sale because the MDEQ ‘doesn’t have the right equipment to copy the original.?
‘I virtually get no help from that office whatsoever,? Roberts added.
Smith said his office was in the process of creating a tape for Roberts, and added that the timeline for a decision on the proposed Pine Island marina is unchanged.
‘We’re still gathering information,? Smith said, noting that the MDEQ was looking at the end of August as a possible decision deadline.
He added that activities on the island itself are outside the scope of the MDEQ’s decision on whether or not to grant Dunaskiss a marina permit.
