LDW hosts leadership conference

School may not have been in session on Wednesday, March 7, but bright minds filled the halls of Lake Orion High School.
Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) hosted this year’s Michigan Association of Honor Societies / Michigan Association of Student Councils? Regional Conference. Over 25 schools from around Oakland and Macomb Counties attended the day workshop.
According to advisor Lora Hogan, it took over six weeks of planning to put the event together.
‘This is the first time Lake Orion has ever hosted,? she said. ‘The kids don’t have school today, and we couldn’t do it with kids here, so this was our chance to do it.?
The conference featured over 30 workshops on different events that schools host.
‘It’s for the kids to attend educational sessions about different events,? Hogan said. ‘It works as an idea exchange, where we get ideas from other schools and then they get ideas from us.?
Two LDW groups presented on events that they host for the Lake Orion Community. One focused on Spooky Saturday, an event hosted by LDW to help local youth get into the spirit of Halloween. The other, Tailgate 101, featured ideas about games, music and raffles that would spice up a boring pregame tailgate.
After spending the morning attending different workshops, students broke for lunch and then teamed up again for one last session. They were placed in groups for a ‘swap shop.? Basically, it was a round-table discussion, where members from different schools could discuss events they host, different issues or problems their council has faced and potential solutions.
