Library gets ready for another summer of movies

Don’t be surprised if the smell of fresh popcorn greets you at the Independence Township Library; it’s just a sure sign that this summer’s ‘Matinee Movies? are back in full swing.
Starting Wednesday, June 2, the library will once again host the summer movie series. From June until August, a new movie will premiere in the Community Meeting Room starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons.
‘We’ve got really great movies that people will like,? Patience Beer, head of adult services, said.
The program started two years ago and has been growing ever since. With more people in attendance, the library has made sure to listen to what the moviegoers want.
‘I did a focus group at the end of last summer and found that people wanted more,? Beer said.
This summer the program will run for three months instead of two as in years past. There is also a focus on recently-released movies instead of showing only classic films.
(Due to part of the library’s licensing agreement with the film studios, the actual movie titles are not permitted to be reprinted in print publications. Contact the library for this summer’s lineup.)
While the program is aimed at adults, children and families are more than welcome to enjoy the films, according to Beer. None of this summer’s selections have a rating higher than ‘PG-13.?
‘If you’ve got your grandkids staying with you for a week, now you’ve got something to do,? Beer said. ‘We’ve got a really nice mix of movies that people will like.?
Also new this year is movie theater popcorn made right at the library. An authentic popcorn maker was donated to the library from the Friends of the Independence Township Library and an anonymous donor.
‘We’re always improving,? Beer said.
All movies are shown on the library’s big screen television with stereo sound in the meeting room. Children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by an adult. Food and beverages from home are allowed while watching the films, but the liquids can not be red or purple. As always, the popcorn is free.
‘I always enjoy a program that brings people together to enjoy films and talk about them,? Beer said. ‘It’s sort of that ‘we’re going to the movies? aspect that makes it an event.?
