“Gaining insight to law at ‘teen court’” Law students from Clarkston High School participated in the Oakland County Teen Court at 52-2 District Court. They took on the identity of jurors, prosecuting and defense attorneys, bailiff and clerk.
“A real life knight’s tale for engaged couple” Joyce Ashley was surprised by her boyfriend and knight in shining armor, Terry McNeil, at work. He appeared at her work dressed as a knight, got down on one knee and asked if she would marry him. She answered with yes.
“Braun to make figure skating debut at Senior Olympics” Seventy-four-year-old Phyllis Braun, who took up figure skating six years prior, was planning to compete in freestyle skating at the Michigan Senior Olympics.
25 years ago – 1993
“Township board cuts cars, cost” The Independence Township Board of Trustees voted 5-1 to reduce its car fleet by two vehicles, saving $10,000 annually over three years.
“From puppy love to true love” Twelve years after their first kiss, Kristin Nowlen and Todd Zeller were married the same place it happened. They met when they were five years old at Clarkston Free Methodist Church. The kiss at 12-years-old came about because of a dare as Kristin’s family was moving.
“Seven seconds” During the Clarkston Invitational wrestling tournament it only took seven ticks on the clock for grapplers P.J. Vandermeer and A.J. Grant to pin their opponents, breaking the previous team record of ten seconds.
50 years ago – 1968
“MYF president attending seminar” Clarkston High School senior Bob Nicoson headed to New York City and Washington, D.C. with a group of 100 young people from the Detroit Area of Methodist Churches taking part in the United Nations – Washington Peace Seminar.
“Chief defends radio location” Village Police Chief Robert Phillips defended his position in having the police department headquarters in his residence on Clarkston Road. He explained it was no cost to the village and the village didn’t have space for the department.
“Cookie sale starts Friday” Northern Oakland Girl Scouts were getting ready for their annual cookie sale and to take orders beginning Jan. 26. Five kinds of cookies were available: peanut butter patties, mint, sandwich cremes, shortbread and new almond swirl.
