The township has accepted the Reconnaissance Survey of Historic Sites as completed by the Mannik & Smith Group, Inc., and submitted it to the Planning Commission for approval and inclusion in the current Master Plan.
Maura Johnson presented an overview of the survey at the Dec. 17 board meeting. She led the effort by Mannik & Smith, which started in October of last year.
With the help of the Orion Historical Society and several community members, they looked at 215 of the most significant and well-preserved historic resources in the township.
The study did not include the historic district of Downtown Lake Orion and was performed in accordance with the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office. Properties examined were all more than 50 years old.
‘The goal of this project is to educate and inform the citizens of Orion Township about the number and variety of local resources that are associated with the history of the community,? Johnson said. ‘The physical remainders of the past become more important with each passing year.?
‘We hope that this study will motivate local citizens to a greater appreciation of the history that surrounds them.?
