Martian nine rally from loss to defeat Montrose

After a tough defeat in the Greater Flint tournament, the Goodrich baseball team returned to form in league action May 9.
On May 8, the Martians fell to Flint Powers 11-1 in the second round of the Greater Flint Tournament. However, the Martians swept a doubleheader from Montrose May 9, improving to 21-2 overall and 11-0 in Genesee Area Conference Red Division play.
Against Powers, the game was tied at one heading into the fourth inning, when the Martians committed three errors, leading to seven Powers runs.
‘Against a quality team like Powers, you can’t have multiple errors in an inning and survive,? Goodrich coach Bob Foreback said.
Matt Hughes was the lone bright spot for Goodrich, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Hughes once again stepped to the forefront the following day in the first game of the Martians? twin bill against Montrose, socking two homers as the Martians earned a 12-5 win. Hughes went 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI, and also was the winning pitcher for the Martians.
‘We bounced back well after getting beat by Powers,? Foreback said.
In addition to Hughes, several Martians got in on the offensive fireworks in Goodrich’s 13-3 game two victory. Nick Wesener went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Hughes and Adam Compeau each had two hits and three RBI.
Kirk Elsworth, Bennett Gillam, Keith Brotherton, and Ty Purdy each had two hits for the Martians. Basil Wilson was the Martians? winning pitcher in the nightcap, hurling four innings in relief of Mike Skinner.
Six days earlier, the Martians gave their coach a milestone victory.
After losing to Lapeer East 12-2 in the first game of a May 4 doubleheader, the Martians defeated the Eagles 14-8 in the second game, giving Foreback his 300th career win.
Foreback, who is in his 11th year as the Martians? coach, said much like his team, he tries not to get caught up too much in individual accomplishments. However, he said he is grateful for coaching some quality players that helped him reach that milestone.
‘I didn’t try and make too big a deal out of it,? he said.
On May 5, the Martians continued their league dominance with a sweep of a twin bill against visiting Mt. Morris, winning the opener 11-1 and the nightcap 7-2.
