Oakview celebrates Literacy Day

On Nov. 14, eighth graders from Oakview Middle School traveled to Blanche Sims, Pine Tree and Paint Creek Elementaries to celebrate Literacy Day.
According to Jillyan Scarborough, eighth grade language arts teacher at Oakview, the eighth graders read a story aloud to the second to fourth grade students and then helped mentor the younger students to write their own stories.
‘The point of the project is to promote literacy throughout the community and show younger students that reading is cool,? Scarborough said.
The project, which all 200 eighth graders participated in, is funded through a service learning grant.
At Blanche Sims, the students also got to eat a pizza lunch with their middle school visitors which was provided by Jet’s Pizza – M-24 and Clarkston location.
According to Sims second grade teacher Cindy Marshall, Mike Couchman of Jet’s provided the school with 16 boxes of pizza to feed the group.
‘It’s just absolutely phenomenal that he would donate this,? she said. ‘The children really appreciated the pizza.?
This is the fifth time Oakview has had Literacy Day.
