Offensive funk costs spikers two games

The varsity volleyball team picked a bad week to have their offense go in a funk.
Playing against some of the top competition the Oakland Activities Association Red division has to offer, the Wildcats got swept in three sets during both their matches this week against Farmington and Lake Orion.
Oxford lost to Farmington 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23 on Tuesday, Oct. 11. According to head coach Kristi McDevitt, the scores were not an indicator of how slow Oxford’s starts were in all three sets.
‘When we finally did, our deficit was too big to overcome in the third set,? McDevitt said.
‘We just weren’t ourselves. We had too little offense and weren’t getting very good passes or digs that allowed us to run our offense,? she added.
Senior Katie Bearse led all Wildcats with six kills, while seniors Lindsey Leppek and Alyssa Delong each had five kills.
The funk continued when the Wildcats traveled down to the Dragon den to face their number one rival on Thursday, Oct. 13.
Lake Orion would sweep the Wildcats out of the building, winning 25-19, 25-18 and 25-16.
Oxford only managed 20 kills during the match, eight of which were from sophomore Darien Bandel.
‘There are only going to be a few matches where we can get away with only putting up 20 kills in the match like we did this week,? McDevitt said. ‘We have to do a better job of controlling our passes and digs to have the opportunity for our hitters to do the work.?
With the losses, Oxford drops to 4-3 in OAA Red play. They wrapped up division play on Tuesday against Birmingham Seaholm before heading over to Lapeer West on Wednesday, Oct. 19 to complete in a quad match.
