OHS choir to perform best of Broadway

There is no need to travel to New York City to hear the best music Broadway has to offer.
Starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, the OHS Choir program presents ‘A Taste of Broadway,? a showcase of top musical numbers from popular Broadway shows such as ‘Phantom of the Opera,? ‘Westside Story,? ‘Spamalot,? ‘South Pacific,? ‘The Wiz,? ‘Guys and Dolls,? ‘Wicked? and more.
The concert is free to the public.
‘It’s a concert, but it’s also a show,? OHS Choir Director Christopher Card said. ‘We will have a combo instead of just a piano; drums and base and keyboard and such.?
‘It’s a neat things for the kids to be doing kind of a different kind of concert if you will,? he added.
Card said he was ‘fired up? for the selected music, which is a mixture of newer and older music.
‘Musicals have just evolved over the last 50, 60 years. So we really captured some musical songs from the 1940’s to the present,? he added.
Card noted he came up with the idea for ‘A Taste of Broadway? during the summer when he was looking for themes for the fall concert season.
According to Card, students really enjoy working on the concert’s selected musical numbers.
‘They dove right in…people were excited even before school started that we were doing Broadway,? Card said.
‘The enthusiasm started before day one, even before they knew what songs they were going to do,? he added. ‘One of the things the audience is going to notice is the kids love this music. That’s observable. They love working on these songs, every one of them.?
All five choirs – Caritas, Concert Choir, Mens Choir, Womens Choir and Treble Choir – will perform individually and combine for two numbers during the show.
Card noted a total of 215 choir members would sing. ‘This is the largest choir in OHS history right now…so that is just real exciting,? Card said.
‘We’ve grown by over 50 students and we have been steadily increasing, but this year it really bloomed out,? Card said. ‘It gets to a point where you think we are going to plateau here because we’ve grown to almost capacity; I knew we would go up this year, but this increase was pleasantly surprising.?
Card is encouraging people to claim their spot in the Performing Arts Center early.
‘Our choir shows have just gotten more and more popular. People know they are just enjoyable,? he said.
