OHS student charged with assaulting a teacher

An Oxford High School student was placed under arrest after he allegedly physically assaulted a teacher Jan. 13.
The 17-year-old male special education student from Lapeer was arraigned as an adult in Rochester Hills 52-3 District Court on the misdemeanor charge of assault and battery.
According to Oakland County Sheriff Deputy John Neph’s report, the student was seated during his first-hour class when he got up and slammed a book continually down on a female students’s desk because two female students were talking loudly.
A female substitute teacher gave the student a verbal warning and asked him to stop and return to his seat. Upon sitting down, he started yelling profanity, causing the teacher to give the student a second and third verbal warning. She then asked the student to stay after class. The student got up and attempted to leave the classroom. According to the report, the teacher blocked the doorway, so no students could leave early. The male student stood facing the teacher, uttered more profanity and asked to be let go.
When the teacher refused to allow the student to leave, he allegedly rammed his shoulder into the teacher, causing her to fall and injure her right arm, elbow and knee.
She went to the clinic later in the day. She suffered a possible separated or fractured shoulder. When Neph asked the student why he didn’t wait to be excused before he attempted to leave, the student said that he was ‘too angry,? according to the report.
Witnesses at the scene offered conflicting reports. One said the student shoved the teacher, while another said that the teacher grabbed the student’s head and faked falling to the ground.
Neph placed the student under arrest without incident. The student is currently being lodged in the Oakland County Jail in lieu of posting a $500 cash bond.
The student is to have no contact with the victim and is not to return to OHS.
According to OCSD Lt. Larry Perry, the case is currently under review by a prosecutor, who is determining if the charge should be bumped up to aggravated assault, a felony.
OHS Principal Mike Schweig said that the school is continuing to investigate the matter. ‘The student has been suspended upon completion of our investigation and we are making the consideration for expulsion,? Schweig said.
