Work is proceeding on the Orion Veterans Memorial on M-24 in Lake Orion, thanks to people who have generously donated their time and money.
The stairs on the east side to M-24 and the light pole bases and wiring and 1,000 feet of underground conduit have been installed. Three thresholds for marking entrance ways to the park have been installed.
The meditation seat and other monument foundations are in.
Several weeks ago, a sign unveiling ceremony was a success. The sign is made of aluminum, stainless steel and baked on powdered enamel. It’s supposed to look as good in 100 years and it does today.
A lot of thought was put into the design and symbols. The left hand side is the famous battle at Iwo Jima; the right side is Old Glory. The middle center is the national seal; the bottom center right and left hand sides are peace doves in hopes there will never be another war.
A time capsule will be placed inside the pedestal in the center of the memorial. Anyone wishing to put something of interest in the capsule, along with a donation, contact the memorial’s office at 248-693-6366.
The memorial committee is currently raising funds and taking donations since the construction funds have been used up.
