Orion’s queen wins award in state event

‘Positive, energetic and outgoing.?
When asked to describe herself in three words, Lake Orion High School senior Stephanie Miszewski chose those three.
Considering her choice of adjectives, it’s not surprising that she was honored with the Miss Congeniality award at this year’s America’s Homecoming Queen Miss Michigan competition.
Miszewski, who was the 2006 Lake Orion Homecoming Queen, was selected from over 500 applicants as part of the top 50 to attend the competition held in Grand Rapids on April 21-22.
‘It was an honor to just be there and be part of the top 50,? she said.
Not only did Miszewski win Miss Congeniality award, but she also walked away with second place honors from the competition. If the winner cannot fulfill her responsibilities, as runner-up, Miszewski will be called upon to help.
Participants took part in an interview process; a luncheon, dinner and breakfast where they were observed by the judges; and formal wear. They were then limited down to the top-10, where each individual was called on stage to answer a question.
Miszewski said that the judges looked at how well you presented yourself, how well you interacted with others, community and family involvement, plans for the future and knowledge of important American history as guidelines for what Michigan’s Homecoming Queen should be like.
‘The best part of the competition was meeting all the girls,? Miszewski said. ‘They were all so nice and it was fun to meet new people and hang out.?
It was the girls who Miszewski met, in fact, that nominated her for the special award of Miss Congeniality.
This made the award really special, she said, because the girls voted for it and then the judges looked at the ballots and offered their input. One other special award was given out based on community service.
Not only was Miszewski elected Homecoming Queen for Lake Orion, but she is also a member of Lake Orion Leadership and a Varsity Cheerleader. She also works in the community at Coldstone Creamery on Baldwin Road.
She will be attending Oakland University in the fall to study special education, and currently interns at Pine Tree Elementary in the special education department.
‘I was so happy and it is such an honor,? Miszewski said of the competition. ‘I feel really proud that I could represent Lake Orion there.?
