Halloween is fast approaching, and with it will soon be trick or treaters out in the neighborhoods going door to door in search of candy from their neighbors.
Holcomb Road residents in Clarkston have been asking City Council for help to keep the street safe. When the city had a police department, they would station a car with its emergency lights on during trick or treating, to help slow drivers down during the evening rush.
Holcomb and other downtown streets are usually mobbed by costumed kids on Halloween. At 6 p.m. on a Monday, the streets will also be busy with motorists heading home.
They were asked, but sheriff’s deputies and Independence Township firefighters can’t do it due to liability, station-keeping, and other issues.
The DPW might be able to send a truck.
In any case, keep kids off the road as much as possible, and carry flashlights. Don’t shine them in drivers’ eyes, though.
Speaking of costumes, check out the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce’s Murder Mystery Dinner, 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, at Pine Knob Mansion, 5580 Waldon Road.
Hosted by the Chamber’s Young Professionals Network, it’s a Great Gatsby themed dinner theater-type evening with the Clarkston Village Players handling the murder mystery show.
I’ll be there with the CVPers, playing the role of the private investigator looking into the shenanigans of the other characters – assorted Prohibition-type mobsters, molls, bootleggers, crooked politicians, and the like.
I have a trench coat and fedora, both very cool, from the Depot Theater costumes department.
After Halloween, deputies will be collecting excessive amounts of candy, for those for whom such things are possible, at local substations, including the one at 6560 Citation Drive in Independence Township. It’s their “Treats for Troops” collection, to send to troops serving overseas. They’ll also collect thank-you and encouragement notes.
The collection of Halloween candy, individually wrapped, but no chocolate, will be Nov. 1-4.
