The 1990 LOHS wrestling squad is looking for some company in the rafters, and the Dragons will send out multiple squads with a legitimate chance to capture the school’s second team state title.
Here’s a look at some of the teams and individuals that will compete this weekend in playoff and tournament action:
Baseball
The Dragon baseball squad will open district play on Saturday against host Oxford at noon in a matchup of two of the state’s top-10 teams.
Lake Orion split a doubleheader at Oxford on May 19.
‘We’ve won a lot on the road, being on the road doesn’t scare us,? said Coach Andy Schramek. ‘We’re all pretty comfortable with the surroundings and got to play two games there already, so we know what the field is like and we know the environment.?
In three games this past week, LO got their offense primed for postseason success.
Last Wednesday, the Dragons finished up their league slate with a 13-3 pounding of West Bloomfield, behind the arm of Connor Mielock. LO finished the OAA I at 7-3, alone in second place.
The following day, the squad had their home finale, sweeping a doubleheader against Novi Catholic Central 17-9 and 12-9.
In game one, the Dragons pounded out 18 hits, including seven in their seven-run sixth inning, which saw 12 players step to the plate. Mike Musary got the win, striking out four in five innings of work.
The sixth inning was golden for LO in the nightcap as well, as they got five runs on five hits to break a seven-all tie. Jon Ruggeri got the win in relief of Jeff Chattaway.
At districts, Stoney Creek, Adams and Romeo round the field.
Golf
Lake Orion heads into this weekend’s state tournament at Forest Akers West ranked third in the state, and should have plenty of confidence, having already topped #1 Rochester twice in tournament play.
Darby Peters, who placed second at states last year and won the regional two weeks ago, will be joined by Britney Hamilton (who also placed in the top-10 last year and was third at regionals) as individual title contenders for the Dragons.
The champion is determined over two rounds of play on Friday and Saturday.
Soccer
The Dragon girls have righted the ship after some early season injury struggles and look to make noise in what is easily the state’s toughest district.
The team drew Pontiac Northern in the first round (which took place after this edition went to press, so visit www.lakeorionreview.com for details), faces a potential rematch from last year’s district against fifth-ranked Adams in round two and top-ranked Rochester looms large on the other side of the bracket.
In their final tune-ups last week the team topped Stoney Creek 3-2 and fell 2-1 to Troy.
They finished the OAA I season with a 3-6-3 mark, good for fifth place.
Softball
With his young team showing consistent growth throughout the season, coach Denny Davis has pointed to district play as a true barometer of their talent.
Like baseball, the softball squad opens against host Oxford, and a win there would pit them against either Stoney Creek, Adams or Romeo in the championship.
Last week, the Dragons dropped a pair of games to Waterford Kettering to finish their OAA I action at 4-6.
Play for the Dragons begins at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday.
Track
East Kentwood will host the Division I meet for the Dragon track teams this Saturday.
Chira Allen will compete in the 100m hurdles, Allie Hock will run the 3200m race and the team of Hillary Reilly, Sydney Gutierrez, Melanie Lamerato and Hock will be in the field in the 3200m relay event.
On the boys side, Kyle Johns will compete in the pole vault, Ryan Ziolko will run in the 1600m and 3200m events, the latter of which will also include Doug Mack.
The boys tied for 16th last Friday at the Oakland County meet, thanks to Johns performance in winning the pole vault event.
