It’s all about quilting at the Orion Township Library this month, with the current display of the Michigan Quilt Project.
According to Adult Librarian Beth Sheridan, as part of the Michigan Quilt Project, Michigan State University Museum, with the help of quilters from all over the state, developed sets of quilt blocks to celebrate quilting in Michigan and to educate the public about quilting traditions.
‘These quilt blocks were designed for hands-on learning or display in libraries or small museums,? said Sheridan, adding that the display has been very popular at the library.
Sheridan also noted that the library is having two programs that tie in with the sewing theme.
On Monday, Sept. 24, ‘In Praise of Needlewomen? will be held at 7 p.m.
The evening will feature Gail Sirna, who will lead a special tour of fine art, showing paintings that depict women (and sometimes men) in the act of stitching.
According to Sheridan, needlewomen are popular subjects of artists around the world and the slide presentation is designed to show why.
‘It will be visually stimulating, intellectually satisfying,? she added, noting that it might inspire individuals to work on their own handiwork.
On Thursday, Sept. 27, ‘From Traditional Quilts to Fabric Garden? will be held at 7 p.m.
Debra Dankois, an internationally recognized contemporary fabric artist, lecturer and workshop teacher from southern Michigan, will give an in-depth look at the creative process and sewing techniques she uses to create her oversized floral quilts and wall hangings.
According to Sheridan, Dankois? slideshow will also be accompanied by a trunk show that features many of her colorful works that are seen in the slides.
