The Wolves are gearing up for the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 1 Girls Tennis Region 7 meet this Thursday.
The season has prepared them as they moved up to the OAA Red where they have seen tough competition.
“We have won the OAA White division the last two years,” said Clarkston Girls Varsity Tennis Head Coach Mary Jo Colonna. “I knew for my team to be better we need more competition. We have Bloomfield Hills and Seaholm, and they beat us pretty well. We were right below Troy. Troy beat us too but it was a close match.”
The Wolves are currently ranked seventh in the state for Division 1. They need to score 16 points to qualify for the state meet and seeing Bloomfield Hills, ranked second in Division 1, has helped.
“Our competition is stronger so it helps a lot to get ready for competitions,” said Colonna. “Bloomfield will definitely come out of it. Lake Orion has three good singles players. Rochester Adams has three good singles players, too. I think we have more depth in the doubles. We should make it to states. We have a good chance.”
The team includes eight freshmen and all started playing in elementary.
“They stuck with it,” she said. “We are in a good position for the coming years. Tons of youth and talent coming up.”
Clarkston hosts the regional meet which includes Bloomfield Hills, Lake Orion, Oxford, Rochester, Rochester Adams, Walled Lake Northern, Waterford Kettering, West Bloomfield and White Lake Lakeland. Some matches will be at Kettering as well.
