The varsity hockey team stepped out of Oakland Activities Association play and traveled to northern Michigan for two games against quality opponents in Gaylord and Mt. Pleasant.
Oxford lost 4-2 to Gaylord on Jan. 7.
Tim Perks gave Oxford the 1-0 lead when he scored shorthanded while Gaylord was on the power play. Gaylord responded by scoring the next two goals before junior Nick Hocker scored to tie the game at two.
Gaylord was able to score two late goals in third, giving them the 4-2 win.
‘We had a hard time getting going and Gaylord came at us pretty good,? head coach Dave Hague said. ‘We had a few quality chances in a game that we knew we weren’t our best.?
Sophomore Oscar Alexandersson stopped 30 of 34 shots.
They rebounded on Saturday, Jan. 8 to battle Mt. Pleasant to a 2-2 tie.
It was a slow start for the Wildcats and they found themselves down 1-0 before junior Nolan Chapman caught fire and scored two goals to close out the first period.
Oxford gave up the game tying goal midway through the second period and were shut down the rest of the game, despite outshooting Mt. Pleasant 34-20 for the game.
‘We had a real strong third period and overtime, but we could not beat their goalie. Give him credit, he was very solid in net,? Hague said.
The Wildcats fall to 7-4-1 on the season.
They traveled to Berkley on Tuesday, Jan. 11 before returning home to face West Bloomfield on Saturday, Jan. 15 beginning at 8 p.m.
