The Lake Orion Sunrise Rotary Club held their charter inauguration night last Friday at Canterbury Village.
The group, which has been meeting since last October, is now 21 members strong. They meet Thursday mornings at CJ’s Village Caf?.
The Orion club becomes the 51st in the district, which includes several southeast Michigan counties and Kent County in Canada. There are about 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.
‘Rotary was founded in Chicago in 1905 and now its influence can be felt around the globe,? said Lake Orion Rotary President Loran Coffman.
Lake Orion had a club as far back as the 1930s, but it dissolved many years ago.
The Rotary Club of Oxford helped sponsor the new club and both past president Bill Devine and incoming president Gini Britton were on hand from Oxford.
Britton also presented a special tribute from Congressman Mike Rogers? office. County Commissioner Mike Gingell and State Rep. Jim Marleau were on hand as well.
Coffman said the Lake Orion Sunrise Rotary Club plans to strengthen and expand the vision of Rotary International by joining Rotary’s global network of volunteers in enhancing their communities and promoting international goodwill through club projects, scholarships, cultural exchanges and grants for development and humanitarian projects.
‘Rotary’s achievements provide an inspiring record of men and women from around the world who have continued to advance humanitarian projects and build both local and international goodwill by being committed to a high ethical standard of service above self,? he said.
Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of business, professional and retired men and women in the community and is both nonpolitical and nonreligious.
