Salon owner raises funds for sister

There is a bond between sisters that will never be broken, no matter how tough the situation.
That bond can be seen between Kelliann Gooch and her sister, Kathy Kindred, this holiday season. Gooch is putting on a fund-raising dinner and concert on Jan. 1, 2010 to help her sister Kathy pay for an operation that can save her life.
The operation will take place at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
‘We’re wanting to raise funds so she can get there on Jan. 11 so she can have the surgery that will help her not only survive, but continue to fight the cancer and eat pain free,? said Gooch.
Over the past couple of years, Kathy has undergone numerous operations that have left her fighting for her life.
The trouble began in Nov. 2007 when KingKathy was diagnosed with having Severe Crohn’s Ulcerative Colitis Disease with Life Treating Fistulous Disease, which has caused her to have her entire colon and all but two inches of her rectum removed.
Then on Dec. 4, 2008, the news got worse. Doctors found cancer cells that were ‘aggressive in nature? on the remaining two inch piece on her rectum.
She also has a rare bleeding disorder that doesn’t allow for her blood to clot properly, which makes it more difficult for the doctors at the University of Michigan to treat her.
Kathy received additional bad news on Nov. 19 of this year. Her doctors at U of M could no longer treat her because of how severe her conditions had become.
She resolved to fight on, and after doing research on-line, she found one surgical team at the Mayo Clinic that looked promising and e-mailed them requesting information. She then filled out the on-line application and answered questions that were related to her condition, and in less than 24 hours the doctors called and said that they could help and that they wanted to see her right away.
‘Everything was over and the Mayo Clinic stepped in and said there was hope because they had a team of surgeons that could handle her combinations of issues,? said Gooch.
Thus came the fund-raiser’s theme, ‘Renewed Hope.?
The idea came about after Kathy found out that insurance company wasn’t going to cover the expense of the surgery because it was considered out of network.
The fund-raiser will take place at Christ the King Church from 6-10 p.m.
It will feature a benefit concert with Christian Music Artist Brent Taylor beginning at 8 p.m. There will be hors d’oeuvres starting at 6 p.m. with a spaghetti dinner at 7 p.m.
During the concert, a silent auction will be going on that will feature a Steve Yzerman autographed jersey, Piston tickets and a Pandora Bracelet from Lucido’s Fine Jewelry in Rochester among other ‘hot items? according to Gooch.
The cost is $15 for the dinner, $15 for the concert and $25 for those who would like to go to both.
Those in attendance can also bring in any old gold they have and turn it into cash for Kathy as well. An associate from Lucido’s will be handling the process. All of the proceeds and the refining fees will be donated.
