Clarkston Community Schools officials have heard from some absentee voters, letting them know they missed the non-homestead millage proposal.
“I had completely missed the school millage ballot on page 2,” said Barb Schlatterbeck of Clarkston. “Yes, it does say in plain black text in the bottom margin to ‘read both sides,’ but who goes to page 2 when page 1 is 50% blank? Well, not me, or my husband. We are seniors – active, educated, and literate – and still made this mistake.”
“We’re grateful a few concerned citizens took the time to bring this to our attention,” said Mary Ellen Rowe, marketing director. “We updated our website and social media channels to show voters exactly what to expect on the ballot.”
If approved, the proposal would allow the school district to continue to levy 18 mills on all commercial, business, rental properties, vacant land, and second-home properties. It does not affect property taxes for primary home residences.
Voters who erred on their absentee ballot can contact their city or township clerk to void their ballot and obtain a new one.
Voters can request a new ballot in person until 4 p.m. on Monday, March 9. All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on March 10. Visit Clarkston.k12.mi.us/vote or call 248-623-5400 for more information.
