Lake Orion High School senior Brendan Regan knew he wanted his Eagle Scout service project to make a difference.
When his mom suggested to work on the gazebo outside the Orion Senior Center, Regan jumped at the opportunity.
‘It’s an outdoor gazebo that I’m going to pave and add a walkway from the existing sidewalk,? Regan said.
Regan, a member of Troop #366 in Oxford, said the contractor scheduled to do the paving project turned it over to him.
‘I was just looking for projects in the area and this one looked like a great service project,? Regan said. ‘It will benefit the senior center and the community.?
In order to complete the project, Regan needs some help, especially from local businesses.
He has already contacted some area stores in search of building supplies such as a cement mixer, over 1,000 pounds of cement, a concrete edger and a finishing trowel, among other things.
Regan noted that the toughest part of the project will likely be digging the six-inch ditch to place the cement in, but added that he has plenty of support from parents and students alike.
The surface area within the gazebo totals three cubic yards (about 12 feet by 10 feet), in addition to the 13 feet by 2 feet of walkway.
Regan is shooting for mid-May to complete the project, which will take a couple days? worth of labor.
‘It definitely depends on how long it takes to get the supplies in,? he said.
With somewhere between five and 10 workers lined up, Regan said the project will take roughly six to eight hours.
‘I’ve never done this before, so I want to make sure we have plenty of time,? he said.
Regan is also looking for donations of food and/or funding that will allow him to feed the workers for their efforts.
Among the materials he’s searching for are bread, deli meats, apples and chips, along with disposable plates and napkins.
Most of the workers that will help Regan with the project are peers from his troop. He said adult volunteers will help with the large aspects of the task.
Regan, who will graduate this spring, is planning on attending West Point Military Academy next year.
Those interested in helping Regan with the project should call him at (248)762-0869 or mail donations to 1080 Walloon Way, Lake Orion 48360.
