Scripps students host summer concert

School may have been out this summer, but music still filled the halls of Scripps Middle School on Thursdays.
Under the organization of eighth graders Michael and Alex Roberts, members of Scripps Middle School Cadet Band meet once a week to continue practicing and playing music together.
‘We wanted to have some fun over the summer,? Michael said.
The brothers got permission from band teacher Eric Crimmins and the school to practice in the band room, and then worked with their fellow band mates under the direction of their private instructor, Dave Heible, who volunteered to oversee the group.
According to Michael, their goal to continue playing over the summer also stems from the band’s selection to play in the Michigan Music Conference, held in Grand Rapids in January.
‘It’s a huge honor,? he said, adding that they wanted to keep improving their skills throughout the summer.
The group, which has consisted of about 16 kids, is hosting a concert to showcase their talents on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The concert, which will be held in the Children’s Park gazebo, starts at 7 p.m. It will mostly like run for about 30 minutes.
‘We wanted to show how we’ve grown over the summer, so we decided to put a show on for the public,? Michael said, noting that they have also invited their teacher, Mr. Crimmins.
The free concert is open to the public, and it is recommended to bring lawn chairs for comfortable viewing.
