Short’s single gives Martians 7-6 win against Durand in nine innings

Even though only one of Goodrich’s two games against visiting Durand May 23 counted in the league standings, the Martians were victorious in both games.
Goodrich won the first game 7-6 in extra innings, and the second game 12-0. The Martians are now 17-8 overall and 14-2 in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division.
The first game, which counted in the league standings, was a makeup from earlier in the season, and was the second extra-inning game the Martians and Railroaders have played this season. Goodrich defeated Durand 16-10 in eight innings earlier this season.
The Martians were ahead 6-5 until Durand tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Ty Purdy started the ninth inning by reaching first on an error. After he stole second and reached third on a passed ball, Bobby Short got the game-winning hit to score Purdy.
Durand had the infield playing in so they could have a chance to throw Purdy out at the plate. Short, a freshman, hit the ball just past the shortstop for the win.
In the second game, Dom Rivera was the winning pitcher for the Martians, striking out six in five innings of work, and also went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Tom Holton, Andy Krause and Dusty Bourassa all notched two hits for the Martians.
The Martians scored four runs in the first inning on their way to a 9-3 win against host New Lothrop in the first game of a scheduled May 18 doubleheader. The second game was rained out and will not be replayed.
Rivera’s two-run home run set the tone for the game. Bourassa tripled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, and later in the inning Purdy walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The Martians also helped their cause with two runs in the second and fifth innings. Bourassa and Caleb Jones led the Goodrich offense with two hits apiece.
