The Varsity softball team had a disappointing end to a fabulous season as the Troy Colts eliminated the Wildcats 7-0 in the opening round of Regionals on Saturday, June 12.
Oxford could not get their bats going as they struggled against Troy’s defense and all-state pitcher. They didn’t have a hit until the third inning when sophomore Courtney Wroubel reached on a single.
After that, the Wildcats only got two hits, with seniors Kelly Cartner and Allie Laidlaw getting singles.
Laidlaw’s hit was a special moment for Head Coach Kristi McDevitt because Laidlaw had been on the bench the entire season after having her ACL repaired in April.
When she stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, she roped the first pitch she saw down the first base line and was able to run and make it to first base.
‘Allie getting to hit made my day, possibly my season,? McDevitt said. ‘She has been sidelined in her senior year in a sport she excels at…she deserves that hit.?
Even though McDevitt was saddened by losing in Regionals, she could not have been happier with the season’s overall outcome, which include the first ever Flint Metro League softball championship in school history, a 23-13 record and a district championship.
‘It was a great ride,? McDevitt said. ‘How can we be disappointed in that??
