Softball team off to winning start

The Varsity Wildcat Softball team opened the season with some gutsy performances to help them get off to a 5-1 start on the season, including 2-0 in the Flint Metro League.
Oxford had to come from behind in their 2-1 victory over Rochester Adams on Tuesday, April 13. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, the Wildcats got back-to-back singles from senior Chelsea Kessler and freshman Autumn Cervantez with two outs. Kessler then stole home to tie the game and senior Kelly Cartner gave Oxford the lead for good with her single.
Senior Corrine Luxton struck out eight batters in the victory.
The Wildcats then headed up to the Owosso Invite on Saturday, April 17, where they finished second with a 2-1 record. The Wildcats lost to Freeland 9-2, but defeated Owosso 9-4 and Swartz Creek 11-10.
Luxton earned the win against Owosso and sophomore Hannah Rogers got the win against Swartz Creek in her varsity debut.
Cartner led the way in the tournament, going 7-11 with five RBI’s. Sophomore Cassie Edgemon was 5-9 with five RBI’s. Sophomore Amanda Boyer went 5-9 with four RBI’s.
The Wildcats opened up FML play on Monday, April 19 with a sweep of league rival Clio.
Luxton was the hero of the day, holding Clio to one hit in Oxford’s 2-0 victory in game one, and shutting out the Mustangs in the Wildcat’s 6-0 victory in game two of the doubleheader.
She also drove in Oxford’s only two runs in game one.
In the second game, the Wildcats finally got their offense going, scoring two runs in the second and four runs in the fifth inning. Rogers had three RBI’s on one hit for Oxford.
The Wildcats will hit the road for their next couple of games, traveling to North Farmington on Friday, April 23 and to Flint Kearsley on Monday, April 26.
