Softball team wins 48-team tournament

The Wildcat Varsity Softball team took home the Championship trophy from this past weekend’s two day, 48-team tournament which was held at Liberty Park in Sterling Heights, MI.
The tournament started out rough as the girls lost to Regina 9-5. But they rebounded nice, winning their next four games, defeating Grosse Pointe North, Hartland, Northland and Utica in route to the championship trophy.
‘That first game against Regina we had a couple of costly errors and allowed them to take some extra bases because we weren’t hitting our cutoffs,? said Head Coach Kristi McDevitt. She also noted that the girls continued to battle and never gave up.
Junior Corrine Luxton added to her already impressive season totals. She pitched all 32 1/3 innings, recording 17 strikeouts while only giving up seven walks and 32 hits. She gave up 22 runs, but eight of the runs were unearned.
Junior’s Kelly Cartner and Allie Laidlaw were offensive forces for the Wildcats. For the tournament, Cartner went five for 12 with 11 RBI’s and Laidlaw finished seven for 11 with seven RBI’s.
‘We were so proud of the girls, they really shined this past weekend,? Coach McDevitt said. ‘It was an amazing gathering of some excellent competition and we played at a high level and competed strong. We couldn’t have asked for more.?
Earlier this past week, they were able to get back on the winning ways in the Metro League, sweeping Flint Kearsley by final scores of 5-4 and 7-1.
Luxton continued her brilliant pitching as she struck out two and only walked two in 15 innings during the doubleheader. She also had a brilliant day at the plate, finishing four for four with a homerun and three RBI’s. Lidlaw, Chelsea Kessler, Cassie Edgemon, Kylie Bowles, and Courtney Wroubel all had recorded and RBI, and Cartner had a total of 3 RBI’s in the doubleheader.
After the week, the Wildcats improved their record to 13-4 and 2-2 in the FML.
